Living Room Style with Arhaus®

24 Jan

images-arh-header

living room: a room in a residence used for the common social activities of the occupants.

And we also know it’s so much more when you are decorating the space!  Usually it reflects the owner’s vision of the space where there are so many ideas and choices to set up this very important room in a home.

Recently asked, if I had been given a furniture item, what would be the style, the mood that would accommodate a beautiful living room.  Not just any furniture item, but from Arhaus!  One of my favorite stores; their sophisticated lines are beautiful in all categories for the home and their showrooms are spectacular!

Since 1986, Arhaus®  has been designing home furnishings!  Beautiful, high quality and so unique!  The company takes their customers seriously and ensures the Arhaus® furnishing meets their high quality standards.

What is the furniture choice? A sectional sofa!  Sectional sofas are meant to have seating without the feeling of restraints of designated seating with style.  There is nothing wrong with a beautiful sofa or a love seat; however sectional sofas give added room and allows the circumference of a room to be fully used when required for that extra seating.

When first introduced,  many thought the sectional sofa was for the lower level of a home; where a game room or bar might be!    Well that’s all changed and Arhaus®’s designers have a beautiful line of sectional sofa’s, over forty-two!  I’d reviewed each description and the steel suspension construction is so welcomed; quality at it’s best!  So it was very, very  hard to choose which one, but I think I got it!

My choice is Darrow, a crescent shaped sectional sofa!  I’d choose this style for it gave me ideas in a living room that would be peaceful,  a Feng-Shui scenario with a modern touch.    This sectional has three options; either 119″, 148″ or 152″, so if a living room could not hold the three sections, the 119″of two sections would comfortably fit in standard size living room.

Now, let’s dove in my excitement of my choices:

  • Arhaus® provides the Darrow sectional sofa in eight beautiful colors; however I was drawn to their custom colors.  One in particular, it’s name is Taranto Blue.  The fabric has look of a herringbone style pattern; which is quite attractive.
  • The paint, I’ve chosen Benjamin Moore’s Feather Gray to be the accent color in the room.  While the wallpaper choice is a shimmer of gold and a luster of gray by Fabricut.
  • Then there’s this gorgeous hand-knotted contemporary rug name Yiska, also by Arhaus® ; it also plays with the color scheme chosen.  It gives the look of reflected water.
  • Keeping with the curve pattern dimensions from the Darrow sectional sofa, I chose this electic Trocadero Kidney brass cocktail table by designer Jonathan Adler.  The table is covered in a pieced and lacquered inky charcoal goatskin and adorned with three, inset sand-cast brass medallions.
  • Next is a tall floor lamp. Also brass; with clear Lucite accents by Savafieh.  And yes, I would use two floor lamps in the far corners of the room (opposite the main window in the living room that allows sunlight to stream in).
  • For accent pieces, it can be limitless in ideas.  I chose white vases of different heights and shapes – giving some crispness.  As for greenery, little cacti plants to place throughout the room.  To scent the room, fresh flowers like colorful peonies, hydrangea and mulberries.
  • Lastly, a 3 panel painting of an inviting Buddha head that can be placed on the living room wall to also tie in the curveness of the Darrow sectional sofa and the color hues selected.

This was a pleasure to do!! You can get great ideas for your home.  Take a moment to view Arhaus®’s website, there’s something for everyone! Arhaus…your home!

A Spur of the Moment Crab Seafood Party = Summer Fun with Family & Friends!!!!!!!

5 Aug

20130805-132353.jpg

“Summer fun is connecting with family and friends, good food and having FUN!!…Letia

A few months ago I was sweetly reminded of the seafood parties I used to give years ago and how it would be so wonderful if we could partake in one again; this time a little smaller!

I thought about it and said; “You know what…why not!” A superb idea, got planned and then held just this past weekend! The most important part of the party of 14, everyone had such pure enjoyment in eating the good food and spending time with each other! Which definitely made a great mix of food and conversations and a lot of laughter!! On Saturday we started with:

20130805-132314.jpg

  • 6 dozen Maryland crabs, cooked in beer, crab seasonings, chili peppers with parboil bags of chorizo sausage and red potatoes!
  • Fried flounder fried in a lite cornmeal batter
  • Fried tilapia in a lite egg Cajun batter
  • Fried shrimp in a lite cornmeal batter
  • Cold penne and prawn shrimp salad; with spanish olives, red and yellow bell pepper with cherry tomatoes
  • Cold chucked corn salad with fresh lime; with specs of cilantro and avocado slices
  • Crab rangoon
  • Cheese platter with crab cheese dip, smoked gouda, brie, goat cheese, salami, mozzarella, honey, strawberries, grapes and flavored crackers.
  • Strawberry shortcake <delicious>
  • Peach Ice Tea, Beer and White Zinfandel

There was more food, more eating and then some more food! Then the next day, yes Sunday it was hot dogs, pork & beans, chips, swimming in the pool and watching SPIKE TV episodes of Bar Rescue with Jon Taffer; leaving us to wonder whether we all could be becoming bar owners! LOL!

Well, I hope this post made you hungry and thinking about the rest of your summer. Is it going well or you just haven’t had the time to even think about having a summer get together? Well maybe, just maybe I might have changed your mind! There’s a few more weeks left! If yes, I would love to hear about it! 🙂

Thanks Oni for suggesting the party! Everyone had such a good time!!!!!!! ❤

Happy Mother’s Day!

Happy Mothers Day

Sending a big ole’  Happy Mother’s Day greeting to all mothers, mother figures and woman who have taken on the role of being a mother to someone!

It is wonderful to take a day, once a year to celebrate YOU!   Your job never ends, daily tasks seem like a walk in the park and you some how keep it all together!

Happy Mother's Day

As I reflect on being a mother also, it has been so rewarding and yet remarkable!   Something about watching out for someone else, makes you stronger!

Then there’s those memories of my Mom, Gilda – which makes me giggle inside and out!

It’s a wonderful gift to be a mother to someone who seeks your opinion, receiving calls of  “I love you” and those other calls which start off with “Ummm, I have something to tell you”!   🙂

Nevertheless, your job consists of multiple tasks and memories to fill up a whole room!  It’s so good to receive feedback, through gestures of love (great for the soul).

So enjoy your day and take a moment to take it all in!

Happy Mother’s Day!!!!

Ps.. and it’s not too late to get some flowers for Mom!  You still have time!

Bathroom Tile – Beginning of a Renovation

9 Apr

Decisions, decisions!

I’d spent 2 hours today deciding the tile for an upcoming project.. it’s renovating a very small bathroom.  How do you keep the character of a bathroom, making it seem new? I am gearing towards modern with a classic edge; defining an old feel.

Tomorrow I will meet with my contractor with some sample selections, view paint colors and discuss the budget.  Due to the size of the bathroom, white will be the overall color.  The goal is to make the bathroom seem bigger with an offset of a dynamic paint color that pops.

I’d selected an octagon white mosaic tile for the floor.  A 3×6 subway tile for the wall.  As a Plan B decision a 6×6 tile for the wall also and finally glass tile in neutral colors intended to cut for inserts also on the wall.

When deciding on your selections, always look for an open box of the tiles you are interested in.  Once opened, you can buy tiles separately.

The prices can range from 45 cents to as high as over $125.00; depending on the choice and type.  If there are no open boxes, ask for a sample.

Once you take the tiles home; you can make a decision. First, ask about the store’s return policy before purchasing the tiles.  Just in case you change your mind on your choices, you want to make sure you can return them.

Oh! Also have a budget and stick to it.   Yes, always have a budget, having no budget is like a prescription for overspending!

I will keep you posted on my progress with the bathroom!  It’s spring and if you are planning also to do a bathroom renovation, start looking at some tiles to see what’s your taste!  Make sure you measure to get the square footage to factor in the costs.  🙂

Williams-Sonoma Great Cooking Classes!

9 Aug

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of attending a cooking class at Williams – Sonoma right near my home!  BREAKFAST!   I was welcomed by a wonderful staff!

Sandy greeted the attendees with a smile and listing of all the recipes to be taught today.  Dianne who was the chef for the day and Monica, her co-worker -helped with a smile.

Oh!  Then there was Tom who working on placing the new displays – while fighting back the smell of bacon in the air!

The class showed how to make granola from scratch, with an added twist of  sesame seeds and currants served with plain yogurt and strawberries, whole wheat buttermilk pancakes with true maple syrup, ending with the most divine Panini sandwich!  Made with eggs, bacon, cheddar cheese, tomato and BUTTER!!!!!!!!    All I needed was a mermosa, newspaper and a cup of coffee to top it off!

The recipes were quite easy, Dianne made it seem simple!  If you ever are in the store, take a peek behind the counter, it’s also a ready made kitchen.  Gas stove, refrigerator and sink! For personal and cozy; not stuffy at all.

This a great way to get some help in the cooking department and be able to check the products being used!  I enjoyed myself and had the opportunity to see others enjoy themselves as well.

I was watching Dianne mix all the ingredients in this cool mixing bowl…I’d liked the colors and said, I need to get that!   I am still using the silver bowls (nothing wrong with it) but I could have some color!

Sandy was wonderful, she explained to me a couple of times, the set contains mixed co lors, even though I wanted just all green!  I purchased the set and a couple of spatulas! Woo Hoo!

Well if interested, go to the Williams & Sonoma website, under Store Events, then Resources and see what complimentary technique classes may be offered at a WS store near you!

http://www.williams-sonoma.com/

Give them a call and register!  This is a great alternative to sitting home and watching the TV trying to catch every word!

Letia 🙂

I did have pictures of the class, but deleted it accidentally from my too many buttons camera!

Architectural Digest’s Home Show 2011

23 Mar

Architectural Digest’s Home Show was recently held in NYC at Pier 94 on March 17 – 20th; this event attracts over 30,000 people.

I wait for this show anxiously every year, planning and creating my list of the exhibits I would love to see. Why, so anxious; you might say…to ask the many questions; to indulge in  what’s new, up and coming!

Many of the representatives are returning from earlier years, so I’ve gotten to know them pretty well.  So it’s always great to see how they’re doing.

I’d arrived on Friday, so teased with the beautiful weather, for the day was 72 degrees and returned on Saturday; a comfortable 52 degrees!  I and many of the attendees were so pleasantly happy to attend the show;  browse and touch!

Upon entering, there was such a buzz.   All types of people, from designers, artists to mothers with their baby strollers; trying to get ideas and perhaps get a moment of relief to have a moment to finally sit down.

The Home Show has everything that you could want in your home, an entourage of sponsors to choose from.  You name it, it could be found!  Broken into categories, the attendee would find:

  • Art
  • Antiques & Mid-Century Furnishings
  • Building Products
  • Flooring
  • Carpets & Rugs
  • Design Services
  • Electronics
  • Fabric & Trimmings
  • Furniture
  • Accessories
  • Kitchen & Bath
  • Lighting
  • Outdoor Furnishings
  • Stone & Tile

Even down to having the perfect orchid!  There is no way that  I could show you everything, but here are a few of my favorites!   Ok, let’s begin!

If you are looking for a unique style, please stop by The Paris Apartment Boudoir; they specializing in French Lucite & mirrored furniture, very European!

Très chic et beau! Looking afar, the wallpaper looked like silk, it wasn’t; this shows you how a beautiful pattern can be just as fabulous! To see how this beautiful exhibit was transpired from beginning to the result and to also read about the owner’s, Claudia Strasser’s vision; please go to http://parisapartment.wordpress.com.   AND so you know, I will be inquiring about that vintage working phone!<on desk!!>

Drake Design Associates, showed that color if you like it, display it. Yellow, turquoise and black, yes it can be brought into your space. Why? Because you want it. Located on the upper East side, this group of designers gave me a lot of ideas and gave me smiles.  As for the owner, thee Jamie Drake, he can pick out a fabric for me anytime!   http://drakedesignassociates.com/

Foundry, the most intriguing beautiful chandeliers a woman could die for! If you looking for something different, this is the place!  Located in New York and LA. www.foundrylighting.com

Lillian August, one of my favorites for product choice! they have just opened up a Lillian August NYC on West 20th St. A magnificent store, where you can get great ideas and be introduced to the many styles from Art accessories, window treatments to floor coverings.  A must, www.lillianaugust.com

Looking for great china for your wedding registry.  I saw this beautiful set, there were Swarovski crystals on the charger, plate trims and around the cups <or you can pretend their diamonds!>.

I waited quite awhile for the sale representative to come back to get some information, no luck!  However, I did take a photo to give you some ideas!

Then there’s DINING BY DESIGN New York, premier fundraising event for DIFFA: Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS, always gives the designers and students a treat, requesting them to design based on their own imagination and vision, No restrictions!  I love it when a plan comes together!

Then…… I ended the day by going to City Lights Diner. All I can say it’s everything a diner should be! Not overpowering, not fancy at all…just comforting food made with care!

I had an open-faced reuben sandwich with french fries and a side plate of onion rings! All accompanied with the best orange soda a girl could ever have! Everyone was so nice; an hour just flew by.  I left there happy; happy! They are on Facebook, who isn’t! www.facebook.com/ciddiner.

Architectural Digest’s Home Show was quite extraordinary!  Hope you can get some ideas.  And don’t forget there’s always next year to attend!  Enjoy!
