Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week – Christian Siriano Fall 2011 Collection

12 Feb

For NYFALL 2011, this year Chrisitian Siriano collaborated with Fiji Water for showing his FALL 2011 runway show.   Like many of who love his work, I’d watched Christian Siriano’s Fall collection on Fiji Water’s live stream!

Christian had a different approach this year; which many were very surprised!  It is always good to not do the norm; circumventing himself, he had a different appeal!   Yes, he’s known for enormous colorfulness, but there are some women; who love his style – but may feel a little refrained in wearing his garments.    I believe he has satisfied those women on the other side of the spectrum.

I particularly play close attention detail.   It started off with the backdrop, a mere iridescent green and low lights; which gives you a hint on the color scheme about to happen.

Then the models came out, the collection started with black, then the iridescent green, then mauve to continue with mixing the same colors with black! The detail; is what he should be most proud of!  Tucks, ruffles, back to shimmer green and black…just fun,  spunky and different with an edge… with a flair knowing it was designed by Christian!

His collection has added new meaning to the black cocktail dress!  Then you have the gowns! Loved them!  My favorite was this black gorgeous 50’s style, with a twist, the front was sheer, to allow the legs to be shown!  Now, if you are going to choose this gown, you must have GREAT legs!  It’s a must!!!! LOL

Now the models had a little slips, a fall or too, but that’s to be expected!  Christian’s Fall collection fits right in; there was something for every type of woman!

Here are some photos, before the runway show:

Just in case, you didn’t get a chance to see the collection!  The music is by Brad Walsh (I always get asked this!)

25 Jan

Edna E Mode

Please note: Although this post was written in 2011, this post’s topic is Mercedes Benz is no longer partner with NYFW.

2015 – The new partners of NYFW are IMG & CFDA. you can email those companies directly or you can email the designers. Email designers so you can speak to them directly, have a resume to attached to the email. If you have time, go on NYFW website and get the list of the shows & designer and just start emailing them (updated frequently via comments on upcoming shows and information).

“Well, I am sure I don’t know, darling. Luck favors the prepared!”

I am going to bring  you as much as I can, the NYFALL 2011 runway shows will begin in about 20 days.  Fashion designers are doing the last preparation for their six months of planning; which consists of  model selections, hair, makeup, SHOES, accessories, lighting design, sound and music.   A lot of hard work!

I’ve received about 10 – 15  e-mails this evening, asking how do you go about volunteering for Fashion Week.  Unfortunately the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Volunteer Program is no longer accepting volunteers for the NYFALL 2011 shows, the deadline was December 17th.

So what do you do? You go for the 2012 Spring Collection!   Start getting you resume together now and work on your cover letter;  outline who you are and why YOU should be considered < a brief summary;  not a book>.

Begin checking the site at http://www.mbfashionweek.com; as NYFALL2011 ends. This is when you can begin to find out when resumes can be sent to mbfw_volunteers@cfda.com and be considered for the collection the site is requesting volunteers for at that time.

Remember it is a lot of work, but such a great opportunity!

  • Help keep up the main event Information Desk
  • Assist in the Volunteer Center
  • Various other tasks for the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Staff
  • Runway Venue Preparation
  • Designer Guest Ushers
  • Backstage Assistance and Set Up
  • Assemble Gift Bags and Press Kits

Don’t forget the seating arrangements for the whose who’s, press, seating ; you name it!   So, if you get star struck, then re-think whether you can be professional in this venue.

I would also pay attention to the sponsors for NYFALL2011 show, getting yourself familiarize helps and review some of the runway videos on my blog to see what are the happenings backstage, can definitely help. 🙂

Upcoming Show!

Good Luck!

Edith Head, an American Icon!

3 Jan

Edith Head

You cannot even have a discussion about Fashion, without somehow mentioning Edith Head!  Even if her name may not be mentioned, the mere fact of her style is always often referred to! ALWAYS!

Who is Edith Head? Born on October 28, 1927 and died 4 days before her 84th birthday on October 24, 1981.  She was an iconic American costume designer, known in Hollywood for setting the history of being bestowed with 8 Academy awards for a woman!  Her star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame; is evidence of her brillance, shown through her work.

Let me just say, that Edith Head had a total of 35 nominations for costume design!  She was known as the designer for the leading ladies in Hollywood’s, the  female stars during the 40’s and 50’s!   I am an old movie buff, I love the clothing designs depicted and they never seem to go out of style.  Edith Head played a major role in this.  Often when looking at a movie starring Ginger Rogers, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn or Elizabeth Taylor <to name a few>, the movie goers would often memorize what they were wearing; anxiously awaiting Vogue patterns to be released for everyone to sew!

Although Edith Head, first was employed by Paramount, she was a sort out designer out of the studio!  A ‘must have’ phenomena! She later worked for Universal Studios.  These were America’s top filming studios and as television productions were beginning to be introduced, her talent was often requested, making her a famous television costume designer too!

It is very important to know how film concepts are created and how it always comes back to Fashion.  Edith Head’s trademark were her dark glasses and Dutch boy hair cut.  She had very pale porcelain skin.  This look was not considered Hollywood glam and because it was different, her fame made it her trademark.  This made it acceptable and was considered the “Edith Head Look”.  Later she would change her style a bit, emulating an Asian style with a chignon; however she was always recognizable.

Although, Edith Head died in 1981, she was sort of reincarnated in 2004 by Disney for Pixar Films in The Incredibles!  The character Edna “E” Mode who was also a fashion designer in the film, designing the costumes of the super-hero family.  Similarities were set purposely.

Edna E Mode

The character’s round glasses paid a perfect and undoubtably homage to Edith Head!   Edna E Mode will be assisting me through the year too!  So when you see her picture, she will be providing some great tips!  Now also, even the Academy Award winning actress Linda Hunt reminds you also of Edith Head, for she wears the Dutch-boy hair cut and black rounded glasses in her character, she is part of the cast of CBS’s NCIS Los Angeles.

Christian Siriano

How about Fashion designer Christian Siriano?  His dark glasses; they pay homage too! <I love his work also, icon in the making too!>.

There have been theatre plays about Edith Head, about her life, books written, many commentaries on the era she represented.  Her work was absolutely extraordinary in my opinion.  So when discussing fashion designers, you cannot forget her, for Edith Head’s designs are still present today; it’s truly timeless.  Although set in the 1960’s, AMC’s Mad Men reminds you of her designs too!

As we are approaching Fashion Week soon, this leads to my segway <smile>, I wanted to speak about the book, I just finished:  Edith Head: The Fifty-Year Career of Hollywood’s Greatest Costume Designer by Jay Jorgensen (publ. 10/2010).

If interested in learning more about the costume designer and see true depictions of her work across the board, I recommend this book!  Nicely done and it’s hardcover.

The photography and the beautiful illustrations depicted would be a great book to give to a young designer or anyone intrigued by the 1940 – 1950’s Fashions; Edith Head was a contributor!  If you are unable to buy the book, please go to http://www.youtube.com and search for Edith Head, there are  a few informative videos available too!

Update! 10/28/2013 marks Edith Head’s 116th birthday, Google has celebrated by making their banner all about Edith’s designs!

Wedding Bliss for Michi & Brandon with Christiano Siriano!

10 Oct

Miami Dolphin wide receiver Brandon Marshall married his sweetheart Michi Nogami in a gorgeous wedding at the Art Deco Paris Theatre in Miami, Florida on Jul 17, 2010!

The wedding gown was designed by the bride herself, where she enlisted my favorite designer, Christian Siriano to make it a reality!  The gown is quite beautiful, but with a funky flare which definitely reflects the bride’s personality!  The groom quite handsome!

Take a look at a few photos which were just featured in Essence®.   For you brides-to-be, there are no rules..your wedding is yours!  I’ve watched TLC’s bridal shows and I know there is so much pressure for the bride, but remember it’s your wedding!

So… hold on steady to how you vision your gown..it’s out there!  You may not be able to get an original like this bride, but there will be wedding gowns for you to choose based on YOUR vision!  So what do you think of the wedding gown?

Be well – Letia 😉

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week – Christian Siriano Spring 2011 Collection

13 Sep

It was called a snafu, a mistake, an oversight…..whatever you want to call it, I was not able to go to Christian Siriano‘s show.   Disappointed??  Hell Yeah!

I had also had plans to meet up with a dear friend who was going to be at Christian’s Siriano’s show!  I haven’t seen her in years (I know crazy!), for she was covering many of the runway shows being held throughout the week as well, so I was super EXCITED!

We, for some reason always miss each other at these type of events, so we were both pysched..only to find out, I had no ticket, no seat, no buzz…which left me sad,  acting like I was 7 years old sad!  I’ve gotten so many apologies up the wazoo, I tell you!  Dinner promises to my favorite restaurants, drinks..you name it!  LOL  I accepted!!<smiling

I so have to remember that the tickets are so hard to get and even though I enjoyed his show last year, there should be no expectancy that I can go every year; it’s by invitation and press glory.. there’s no guarantee!  None!  Well, it’s Monday and it’s a big day!  My friend Al, says starting at nine in the morning to nine at night he’s busy, including Betsey Johnson at 6pm, and one or two after parties (it’s only work, lucky him!).

Anyway enough about my sad story, you all are interested in Christian Siriano’s designs for the Spring 2011 and video of the show below has just been posted this morning.  I have also attached, my dear friend Lisa’s commentary on the show (also just posted this morning) via her blog on www.examiner.com with some beautiful photos!  She will be at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week this week also, so check back to her blog to see other designers too! <we are going to connect, promise!http://www.examiner.com/bridal-fashion-in-new-york/christian-siriano-spring-2011-leaves-you-speechless-yet-again?cid=examiner-email

P.S. I was able to see a glimpse of Christiano Siriano at NYC’s Saks Fifth Avenue Fashion Night Out…it was packed; such a buzz. ANDDDD, I was able to go to Manolo Blahnik‘s trunk show, let’s say I left there walking very happy!  I’m off!
