Garden Conservancy – Open Day Program in Westchester County, Chappaqua – Seeds of Design!

10 May

GardenConservancylogo

Garden design is the creation of plans for the layout and planting of gardens and landscapes. Gardens may be designed by garden owners themselves, or by professionals.  So one who loves the joy of gardening, would be so excited when the Garden Conservancy had announced Westchester County NY Open Day for private gardens!

One of the private gardens that are being showcased is by my dear friends, Shoba Vanchiswar and Murali Mani!  Although they are very modest, has won the 2007 Golden Trowel award from Garden Design magazine and not to mention, “The Best of” in Westchester Home Magazine!  These two were so delighted when I told them that I would be attending opening day and I was as well.  I love flowers and was looking forward to seeing their pride and joy!

Driving down the road of their home, parked cars were lined up…this is a very big deal!  I was afraid that there would be nowhere to park!  So when I saw a space; I said to myself out loud happily a “Yes”!  Walking towards the home, there were two ladies who greeted me and provided me with reading material on the Garden Conservancy and a handout giving a summary of the garden highlights I was about to see!

So as I am talking, I suddenly hear Shobha’s delightful voice “Letia, you’re here!”  After a great big hug and kiss, Shobha informs me that her job is to greet the visitors and her husband; Murali is in the rear of the home answering questions and offering help where needed!

So off I went on the tour.  In knowing that the garden was just beginning to bloom; I was surprised the variety of colors so far present!  It was very pleasing!  Walking on the side of the home; it was important for me to take my time – I was afraid that I would miss something.  You definitely could see the detail;  it was very thoughtful and it is expressed quite lovely all the features that a garden should have.   Jade succulents, a damask “Leda” tree,  a fig tree and a tree peony waiting to bloom!  Potted herbs of citrus and rosemary.

Then greeted by a wonderful lionhead fountain and a hidden secret of a wood burning brick oven – with a nice sun ray design.  Then you notice the checkerboard garden of beautiful phlox plants!  Even a beautiful Belgian espalier of apples and pears.  Upon turning, you are taken in by the all the little details that add to the garden’s charm; like the stack of books with Shobha’s name, glass bells aligned catching the sun or the airplane swing made of wood!

Upon looking back, there is a meadow of flowers and a greenhouse.  Then suddenly; you notice a tree house!  Instantly saying to myself, this garden has had a lot of good times and love!

There was a very cool breeze, as I walked through the meadow – I turned back to look at the home and a noticed there were many visitors.  Proving this three year old garden s the talk of Chappaqua indeed!  Shobha and Murali even provided classical music to play in the background!  Not the radio or a CD, but classical violinists who were all so escatic to climb the tree house and play music throughout the day of the opening!

The garden was open from 10 am – 4 pm; where I found myself staying to the end!  The day ended with Shobha and Murali’s beautiful moment…… both dancing lovingly in the meadow.

Tropical Feel Style Decor – Why Not!

2 Jan

Yesterday while speaking to one of the guests at a party I was attending, Karen indicated that she had finally decided to have a mature apartment!  Gone are her college days mentally and now wants to have place which still says her, but more mature!

She said that she went to a store the other day; where she was completely lost; she wants a tropical feel  <loves the style; since taking a trip this past summer> – but not so that it commands the room!

When thinking of tropical, I think of linen, cool color palette, leafy plants and touches of wicker in retrospect.   So I’ve looked at various photos and sent her a couple of photos for some ideas!

tropical-living-room

I told her the photos could be used as a guide!   Slipcovers for her sofa if she didn’t want to buy a new sofa, change of her color palette on the walls, plants and some cool accessories for the room, could give her the room she wants.

Her budget is modest, so I’d pointed to my go to website, www.overstock.com by typing the word ‘tropical’ in the search engine, a lot of nice items will be returned!

I received a reply note on this wintery morning, with a lot of THANK YOU’s!  I think now she is on the right track!  Isn’t it wonderful to be thinking tropical in the winter months!  To have this feel all year round is a such a great idea.

You know my motto, Enjoy your space …Enjoy your Life! 🙂

Did You Know Your Blog is an Asset? Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIN…too!

30 Apr

spotlight - social

Have you ever thought about whatever happens to a personal e-mail, Facebook, Twitter, Flickr or other online accounts?

Hmmm, I did too not give it much thought about it – until the other day when trying to change all my passwords (I do it every 60 days); it occurred to me.

Thinking, my  blog legacy must go on! <smiling!>  So I did some research and found out some information about this digital world we live in!

Did you know that “digital wills” and “digital estates” are emerging as hot topics as we become more vested in the online world.  Digital will?

Well actually it’s not necessary to draw up a separate digital will.   Simply adding your digital assets (with user names and passwords) to a standard will should be enough.  All your digital information is an asset!  Either way, going without a plan for these assets is a bad idea.  Especially if you have a blog and it’s brings in income, you are journalist with your own blog – or – you just want to protect the information, etc!

Below are examples of what some of the more popular e-mail and social networking sites do with your accounts:

Google (includes YouTube, Google+, Blogger and other Google properties): Through the account settings, users can set a timeout period of three to 12 months for their account and instruct Google to notify and/or share data with friends and family or delete all information if the account becomes inactive. Google will try to contact the user via a secondary e-mail address and/or text message before shutting the account. If no answer is received, Google will follow through with the customer’s wishes.

Hotmail: Microsoft has a “next of kin” process which allows for the release of Hotmail’s content, including e-mails, attachments, address book and Messenger contacts. The account contents are sent via a data DVD. They won’t provide access to the account or transfer it to another name.

Facebook: Relatives can request that Facebook memorialize the deceased person’s page. Only those “friended” by the person while he or she was alive may leave memorial posts on the page. The account is otherwise locked down. You can also shut down the page altogether by providing Facebook with a death certificate. For Facebook’s Instagram service, a next of kin would need to send an email request to the company to get the ball rolling.

LinkedIn: Next of kin can either close the account or memorialize it.

Twitter: Accounts that have been inactive for two years are shut down. Next of kin can contact Twitter to deactivate the account sooner. It will not provide log-in information.

Yahoo!: This includes photo-sharing site Flickr. Once a death certificate is provided to the company, the deceased’s account will be completely shut down and all content will be permanently deleted.

iTunes and Kindle e-books: The content in your Apple iTunes library and the e-books in your Amazon Kindle account are nontransferable since you pay for a license to use the content. In addition to providing loved ones with your login details, you can try converting some of the content to Digital Rights Management (DRM)-free formats while you’re still alive.

Website URLs and personal blogs: URLs that are registered to you are true assets and are transferable, as is your blog.

You can also set up an Administrator, other than yourself for some of your accounts – just in case you are unable to access them.  Also, check the account Manager sections, to see if there are any specific settings you can include.  Google has just recently added a feature!

It is always good to take a moment to think about a “what if?”.   I hope this information is helpful!

Skin Care! It Just Takes A Little Time!

3 Mar

“Letia, we met you at the InStyle event for Bare Minerals and John Adler; where most of us kept admiring your skin! What do you use to keep your skin so good! There’s not a bump on your face (we purposely was looking), which made your makeup look simply flawless? Linda”

I always get the question, what do you do to have such great skin? Suprisingly it’s not a hard regimen, but I stick to it – no matter what!

It’s easy to cover all your bases, small steps to healthy skin!

There’s not one brand of products I stick to, it’s the products which I have found to work best for me. You will have to do some work to find out for yourself.

I usually ask for samples (5 -6) and coupons to test a product by contacting the company. You can never know how a product works after one application, unless you try it for about 3 – 5 days.

However, if when using a product it gives you an immediate skin irritation, STOP using it!!! If you have to use more natural products, less abrasive – you may have to go right in the kitchen and make your own! It’s easy and simple.

Nighttime

  • Put on some soft relaxing music!
  • If you wear makeup – you should never go to bed with makeup on your face! NEVER!!!!!!!!
  • I first fill my sink basin with clear warm water, a green tea bag and place a clean washcloth; immersed in the water for about 3-5 minutes (if you have a towel warmer – you can warm it up that way too).
  • Then taking Albolene, I remove my makeup with a soft tissue. Followed by 2-3 makeup remover cloths; my favorites are by Neutrogena (economy pack from Costco) or e.l.f..
  • Then I use a drop (dime-size) of NARSkin Gentle cleanser and wash my face with my hands (in a in/then out motion). The cleanser is very light and it is infused with wild rose extract and chamomile; also Monoi oil.
  • Then I take the warm washcloth, wring out excess water and let it rest on my face for about 2 minutes. Then I wipe my face; four dabs of pure coco butter to moisturize the face, drink two glasses of water.
  • If it was a extremly tiresome day, I’ll place two tea bags in the warm water with washcloth and use them later to place over my eyes for about 5 – 10 minutes (cool to the touch)…. then say Goodnight!

Daytime

  • Fill my sink basin with clear warm water, a green tea bag and place a clean washcloth.
  • Using my Clarisonic cleansing brush, I use a drop (dime-size) of NARSkin Gentle cleanser and clean face in the four areas (forehead, right cheek, left cheek, then chin and neck). If you do not have a cleansing tool – in one minute circular motions use a wash cloth in the same areas.
  • Take the warm washcloth; wring out the excess water and let is rest on my face for about 2 minutes. Then I wipe my face. Then take magnifying mirror and tweezer – I do the eyebrow inspection to remove any unruly eyebrow hairs.
  • Then I moisturize with RevitaLift® Triple Power™ Deep-Acting Moisturizer* cream on face and neck; apply in a in/then out motion). SPF30 cream on. All followed by drinking two glasses of water.
  • Then I wait about 10 minutes before putting on my makeup. If not going out, then a fresh face it is!

* I did a trial for 2 weeks with samples and used a provided coupon by L’oreal to buy the item! Skin is more supple since using it.

For the Body

  • I use a body brush with a nice body wash when taking a bath or shower. Lately, I’ve been using Dove’s Shea Butter Beauty Bar With Warm Vanilla…the moisturizing is GREAT! But I also use VitaBath and this pure French soap called Marseilles Soap Lavender Soap Bar is to die for! I received 4 bars as a gift, it’s wonderful – a bit pricey – but you can splurge on yourself once in a while!
  • All followed by a warm towel, moisture with good old Vaseline with coco butter!

Now I did purchase a jar of Intensive Glow Pads Brightening Treatment pads from BareMinerals to help even out my skin tone, so I will keep you posted on the results!

Letia’s Skin Care Items

Also, I cannot tell you how essential it is to moisturize and to drink water too! WATER? H2O, yep WATER! The body needs it and the skin needs it even more! And healthy eating too!

There are so many variations in skin types. If your daily routine is not getting the results you need, try going to a certified dermatologist. There are so many advantages in seeing one; where there are many options available to achieving healthy skin!

The last thing is that really helps me with my skin care is to take “ME, ME and ME” breaks to distress, once in a while making a teapot of my favorite tea; such as chamomile or Jasmine and always have a good laugh!!

I hope this was helpful! Thanks so much for writing me and I will be back at the BareMinerals Boutique real soon!!!! 🙂

Perfume Q&A, Fragrance 101!!

31 Oct

Famous Iconic Fragrance

Famous Iconic Fragrance

What do all these fragrance terminologies mean? What’s good for my budget? Lena – Fort Worth, TX

I can see how this would be confusing! Sometimes the prices can be steep and you may wonder what are you buying! For me, I too have to remind myself…some of it you are actually spraying in the air too! However, it makes you feel and smell wonderfully!! 🙂

So here are the meanings:

Parfum – French translation for perfume! 20% to 30% concentration of essential oils used to compound the scent! The intent is to last longer on the body, therefore it’s the most expensive!

Eau de Parfum – French translation again meaning a lighter perfume. About 15% to 18% concentration! Less expensive than the parfum formula.

Eau de Toilette – Mostly in a spray bottle with 12% to 14% concentration. Very light, can be used only two times to obtain the desired strength of the scent. Based on the formula, it can be totally satisfying for a budget!

Cologne – The lightest of them all! Only 6% to 8% concentration! The scent won’t stay long, therefore a re-application is needed, multiple times throughout the day! Less expensive and a price point which should not increase much!

It is important for any fragrance type to be kept in a cool place, like the refrigerator!!! Yes, the refrigerator – the formula blend will not change and will last!

Picking a fragrance, can be fun! Are you in the mood for floral, sweet, spicy or perhaps earthy with a fruity twist? There are so, so many to choose from! However, remember your body chemistry is unique! Just don’t take a perfume tester and spray it in the air to see if you like it!

Spray on your pulse points and wait at least 5 to 8 minutes (don’t mix with another). Determine if you like the fragrance and you don’t have an allergic reaction. If you don’t like it, ask for an alcohol swab, remove and then ask for coffee beans! Yes, to help clear your senses and then try another one!

I have a few favourite of my own fragrances, some are listed in the Letia’s Favorites tab, while the others are: Betsey Johnson’s TooToo, Rihanna’s L’Fleur, Banana Republic’s W, Givenchy’s Amirage and the best for last is Valentino’s Valentina which I buy duty free for the parfum!

I do like a layering effect, so the fragrance lasts longer! So give this a try also!

I usually buy either the matching soap or bath/shower gel. Use this first, then dry, apply your regular light scented lotion to your body, air dry, then put on the matching lotion (if you have).

Then finally spray the fragrance at your pulse points, followed by another little spray when you are ready to go out the door!

Still stumped on what fragrance? You can go to your nearest department store and ask for samples OR go to Sephora, for $50 you get a sampler of the top fragrances (click Sephora).

Hope this information was helpful! Remenber to have fun! Once decided, I’m sure it will become your signature fragrance! And Oh! For men, the word cologne or pour de homme are used!

For my readers, do you have a favourite or signature fragrance? Please share and tell why you love it!

One of my favorites! Coco Chanel Hint Bigtime!

Letia. 🙂

Little secret…at your local Sephora; the staff (if asked), will refill your tester vials free of charge (only 0.05 fl. Oz. Or less and 3 per visit) to also help with your decision!
